| 1015 | Antique North Carolina Folk Art Cane, ca. mid-19th c., painted black wood, a carved green snake entwined around shaft, owner's name and location - John Worsham / Caswell Co., N.C. - deeply carved in bold letters in spiral. A popular form enhanced by geographic and family identification. Two Caswell County men having this name have been found. The first, John C. Worsham, was born there in 1815. The second fellow, John D., enlisted in Co. "C", 13th NC Volunteers on June 28, 1861. He served in the Confederate army until paroled shortly after the surrender at Appomattox. These men were probably father and son, with the cane being made by the latter sometime after the Civil War. | 1053 | Cordray Simmons (NJ, 1888-1970), Cattle, synthetic resin on board, signed lower left "Cordray Simmons," cattle gather in front of a red roofed barn as two figures with pick and sack gesture above, attractive molded frame with gilt highlights; Cordray Simmons was one of the many fine American scene painters working during the 1920s through the 1940s. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey where his parents were active in the arts as well - his father was a mural and scenic painter and his mother a dancer. Simmons received his first formal training at the Evening Technical High School, where he also taught clay modeling in 1905. Simmons took over his father's business as a scenic painter in 1909 and began spending the summers at the Art Students League in New York. While at the League, Simmons studied under William Merritt Chase, F. Luis Mora, George Bellos, and later, Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller. Simmons had fully settled into life in New York City by 1925. He was elected a member of the Allied Artists of America, Inc. in 1926 and departed later that year for independent study in England, France, and Germany. Upon his return in the spring of 1927, Simmons continued exhibiting in numerous galleries throughout the city. He opened an art supply store in Greenwich Village, where he met his colleague and future wife, Louise Osborne. His dabbling at the store, combined with a position as a technical artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art, led to the development and use of synthetic media. Although neither Simmons nor Osburne commercially capitalized on their findings, they "laid the groundwork for the development of the most popular medium of today - acrylics." | 1060 | Oscar Soellner (IL, 1890-1952), Choke Hold, oil on canvas (relined), unsigned, retains paper Chicago Galleries Association exhibition label, study of a tangled tree trunk against a dramatic colored ground, housed in a later period-appropriate gilt wood frame; Oscar Daniel Soellner was primarily a self-taught artist, studying art books on his own and later enrolled in formal classes at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. He divided his time between that of a commercial artist in the city and a more rustic and fulfilling life in the country. He and his family spent many summers and vacations in the artist's colony of Grand Detour, Illinois, where he enjoyed painting in the outdoors. He exhibited in Chicago and her environs, including a long run at the Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago off and on from 1923 until 1950. In the mid 1920s, the divorced Osborne fell in love with and married a fellow regionalist, Cordray Simmons. Together they enjoyed a life of artistic opportunity, exhibiting frequently in New York City and further afield. She was elected a member of the Allied Artists of America in 1926 and invited for memberships in the National Association of Woman Painters & Sculptors, Audubon Artists, and the National Association of Woman Arts. She exhibited works at numerous galleries, the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Whitney Museum beside other great American scene painters such as Thomas Hart Benton, John Sloan, William Glackens, and Edward Hopper. | 1350 | Qing Dynasty Jade and Celadon Ruyi Sceptre, possibly Qianlong Period, classic form consisting of a curved green jade shaft having pierced geometric borders, two simple carvings of fruits grace the top while two areas of hatch marks decorate the underside, three oval celadon jadeite plaques are inset into the darker jade of the shaft, the largest, at the head, is richly carved with two bats circling among peaches, the center plaque is filled with two Buddha's Hand citrons, while the distaff plaque has a pomegranate. In Chinese art, these fruits comprise the "Three Plenties" motif symbolizing longevity, joy and offspring. Pierced at base for attaching tassel. The whole rests on the sceptre's original silk-covered wooden display base. The smallest plaque's collar was accidentally detached and has been professionally restored, with evidence of the former break only visible on the underside. The scepter is otherwise in very good condition. There has, however, been considerable fading and loss to the display base's silk wrap. The consignor's verbal history of the sceptre is that he acquired it in Montevideo nearly 50 years ago from the son of Uruguay's ambassador to China's last Imperial court. The stencil is executed in bright, pure colors of the figures' clothing.
