Lot#: 301
Description: A large 19th century Italian micromosaic picture depicting a panoramic view of the Roman Forum, attributed to master mosaicist Cesare Roccheggiani. The remarkable Italian micromosaic was composed from tens of thousands of minute pieces of opaque glass. Ceasare Roccheggiani was active at the Vatican workshops from 1856 to 1864. Producing such a luminous painterly composition, required skillfully selecting the tiny individual tesserae from a vast palette of colors, then painstakingly setting the minute tessarae in place within the micro detailed scene. The circa 1870s large mosaic weighs over 100 lbs and is supported on a iron strapped frame foundation. For nearly 90 years the important micromosaic rested undisturbed above the mantel in an old Tampa, Florida estate. Provenance will be provided to the new owner. In good condition with no loss or repair. Measures 32 1/2" high, 58 1/2" wide and 1 1/4" deep.
Estimate: 100,000.00 - 200,000.00
