Richard Conger, Naval photographer accompanied Admiral Byrd on several US Navy explorations of Antarctica; in 1947 as leading chief of the photographic team he and the group commander were the first to find and enter explorer Sir. Ernest Shackleton's 1907 hut at the base of Mt. Erebus. Conger was fortunate enough to be the first to document the interior of the hut in photographs. During the British expeditions to Antarctica both Shackleton and Sir. Robert F. Scott constructed huts for shelter as they pioneered their individual routes to the South Pole. This glass pickle jar was among the items left behind by Shackleton and his men. Glass jar has embossed lettering "Gillard & Co. Ltd.
