Performance Considerations

Top  Previous  Next

There are a lot of factors that can influence the performance of Auction Flex on various computer installations. This is a list of guidelines to follow:

Disable hard drive caching on the primary workstation.
Optimize the primary workstation for background services or file services (depends on OS) if secondary computers are running slowly.
Always use 100mb or better networking equipment including NICs, hubs, switches, etc.
Always ensure that your primary workstation is the "latest and greatest" computer on your network.
In environments with 5 or more workstations consider getting a dedicated file server with a RAID 1 (mirrored) hard drive array.
Keep in mind that Auction Flex has built-in performance options for certain forms, including Clerking & Checking Out. To speed up the clerking screen, go to Miscellaneous->Option Maintenance->CLERK tab and set the Performance Tuning options appropriately.

O.S. Limitations

When using 5 or fewer workstations (computers) it is most common for one of the workstations (computers) to act as the "server". After 5 computers it is recommended that you utilize a dedicated server computer that is not being used as a workstation. In either scenario, this "server" computer can either be running a regular operating system or a "server" operating system. In the event that you are using a regular operating system (98, XP, Vista), please note the following Microsoft limitations:

XP Home allows a maximum of 5 peer-to-peer connections
XP Pro allows a maximum of 10 peer-to-peer connections
Vista Home allows a maximum of 5 peer-to-peer connections
Vista Business allows a maximum of 10 peer-to-peer connections

What this means to you is that if you have 7 computers and you want to use one of your computers as the "server", you will need to ensure that it is running XP Pro or Vista Business, as the Home variety of XP or Vista will not allow the other 6 computers to connect simultaneously (max of 5). If you are using a server operating system (2000 server, 2003 server, Small Business Server (SBS), etc.) then the standard server licensing will apply.
